Insect eyes
(Preview)
It turns out that Opo Terser was the photographer who captured those amazing jumping spider faces. Opo's been gracious enough to let me use some more photos, so I went digging and discovered that Opo has looked more than spiders in the eyes. Enjoy this montage. Bomb-sniffing Bees
(Preview)
Bomb-sniffing Bees Why is this bee restrained and being (punny!) assaulted by a cotton swap? It's easy. It's being trained to sniff out something other than nectar. Why? Because bees (and wasps) make for amazing scent detectors. Read on>>>

Cicada Life Cycle "smartest bug I ever saw"
(Preview)
A cicada is an insect with large eyes wide apart on the head, and usually transparent, well-veined wings. Cicadas do not bite or sting, are benign to humans, and are not considered a pest. Most cicadas go through a life cycle that lasts from two to five years. Some species have much longer life cycles, e...

Caterpillars of Death .. yikes o_0
(Preview)
Caterpillars of Death You're looking at a variety of Ionomia moth caterpillars. All are spikey, and none are benign. Quite the opposite. Though the moth is harmless, the bristles on the larvae are lethal. Dozens of people in Brazil die just by touching them. Why? The toxin in the bristles is a powerf...

Hornworm Host
(Preview)
Hornworm Host I abominate the tomato hornworm (Manduca quinquemaculata). The caterpillars are enormous (up to 4" of undulating length), and the helicopter-moths (technically Hawk, Sphinx, or Hummingbird moths), are even worse, with a wingspan of 5 inches. I've had cats drag these monste...
